Tenerife holds most of the catalogue. You can reach Teide several ways: excursion with cable car from the south (5 hours), half-day tour with hotel pick-up, summit ascent with cable car ticket (6 hours) or, after dark, stargazing with dinner (7 hours). At sea there are catamarans and sailing boats of 3 to 5 hours for whale watching from Costa Adeje and Arona, plus diving (discover dives of 20 or 40 minutes and 2-day PADI courses), kayaking, jet ski, tandem paragliding in Adeje and a real 50-minute submarine trip from Amarilla Golf. On land: buggy tours along the coast or up to Teide, electric MTB in La Orotava and Garachico, and the northern wine route, 8 hours with a tasting and lunch at a winery.

Fuerteventura is about guided hikes of 3 to 5.5 hours (sacred mountain, Gayría volcano, wild coast and beaches, goat trekking), the glass-bottom boat and speedboat in Jandía, the 800cc buggy from Corralejo and photo sessions in Caleta de Fuste. Gran Canaria is the adventure island: canyoning, rock climbing, via ferrata for beginners and full-day tours to the red canyon, the heart of the volcano and the laurisilva forest, all with hotel pick-up. Lanzarote is done by bus (full island in 8 hours, or César Manrique Foundation and Teguise market in 4 to 5). La Palma adds the Tajogaite hike, the Cueva de Las Palomas lava tube and kayaking to Cueva Bonita. La Gomera is a 12-hour day trip from south Tenerife or Puerto de la Cruz.

How to choose: with half a day you can do Teide in 5 hours, a catamaran in 3 or a buggy in 2. With a full day, go for the island tour, the red canyon on Gran Canaria or La Gomera in 12 hours. Full-day bus tours are the simplest to organise and most include hotel pick-up.

Where the excursions start

On Tenerife the south (Arona, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Amarilla Golf, San Miguel de Abona) concentrates boats, diving, paragliding, buggies and the departure to La Gomera; the north (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Garachico, La Laguna) has the bike tours and the wine route. On Fuerteventura the meeting points are Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma and Morro Jable. On Gran Canaria and Lanzarote almost everything includes hotel pick-up; on La Palma each activity page gives the meeting point.

Practical information

  • Languages: every activity runs in English and Spanish; many Teide, Fuerteventura and La Gomera tours also in German and French, and several bike and buggy tours in Italian. Each activity page lists them.
  • What to bring: warm layers for Teide even in summer (the cable car base sits above 2,300 m); sun protection and clothes that can get wet or dusty for boats and buggies.
  • Booking: in high season (July, August, Christmas and Easter) Teide, catamaran and La Gomera places sell out days ahead.
  • Season: departures run all year; the whales off south Tenerife are resident, so sightings happen in any month.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what you want. Tenerife has the widest choice (59 activities: Teide, whale watching, diving, paragliding, buggies and bikes). Fuerteventura is for guided hikes and boats in Jandía. Gran Canaria for canyoning, climbing and mountain tours. Lanzarote is done by bus, La Palma is volcanoes and kayaking, and La Gomera is a day trip from Tenerife.

Yes. Day trips to La Gomera leave from south Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz, last 12 hours and run in English, Spanish, German and French. For the other islands you need to be staying there: our Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma activities start on the island itself.

Many do. The Gran Canaria tours (red canyon, laurisilva, canyoning, via ferrata), the Lanzarote bus tours, the Teide excursions with pick-up and the Tenerife island tour include it. Sea, diving and paragliding activities usually have a meeting point in Costa Adeje, Arona or Amarilla Golf. Each activity page lists pick-up areas and times.

Anything from 15 to 20 minutes for a tandem paragliding flight to 12 hours for La Gomera. The submarine takes 50 minutes, a catamaran 3 hours, Teide with cable car 5 hours and the island tour 8 hours. PADI courses take 2 days. The table on this page gives the duration for each type.

Always English and Spanish. The 3-hour catamaran in Costa Adeje, the Viking ship, the glass-bottom boat in Jandía, the family walk with goats on Fuerteventura (3 hours), Loro Parque with transfer, the submarine and the discover dive from the shore. Minimum ages, where they apply, are shown on each activity page.

There are departures all year. The whales off south Tenerife are resident, so the catamaran runs in any month. On Teide it is cold at altitude even in summer and in winter the summit access can close for snow or wind. July, August, Christmas and Easter are the busiest periods.

For Teide, catamarans, La Gomera and tours with hotel pick-up, several days ahead in high season. Entry tickets (Palmetum, Güímar Pyramids, Forestal Park) can usually be booked closer to the date.
