What to do with Tenerife South excursions

The sea comes first. Four whale watching catamarans sail from Arona and Costa Adeje, from 3 to 5 hours: the glass-bottom catamaran, the Freebird from Costa Adeje or the 5-hour catamaran tour. For something different there is an exclusive sailing trip of 3 hours, two Viking ship trips of 2 and 3 hours, and a real submarine for 50 minutes from Amarilla Golf, with an audio guide in twelve languages.

Then the mountain. Half-day coach tours (5 hours) go up to Teide with hotel pick-up, with or without the cable car; the summit ascent takes 6 hours; and three evening options combine dinner and stargazing. We currently have no private tours with a driver-guide: the ones we used to list came from a supplier who has stopped working with us.

And the adrenaline: buggies in Costa Adeje and around Teide, paragliding in Adeje and Ifonche (15 minutes to an hour and a half), discover scuba dives and PADI courses, kayaking from Los Cristianos, jet ski from Amarilla Golf and electric MTB routes.

  • Half day or full day: catamarans and the half-day Teide tour fit in a morning; the island tour, the full-day tour and La Gomera take 8 to 12 hours.
  • With pickup or on your own: the Teide tours, the island tour and La Gomera collect you at your hotel; the boats, the diving and the paragliding meet at their own starting point.
  • Pick-up or not: Teide and coach tours collect you at southern hotels; boat trips, diving and paragliding start at the meeting point shown on each activity.

Where excursions from Tenerife South start

Arona has 24 departures (Los Cristianos harbour, Playa de las Américas, paragliding take-offs in Adeje and Ifonche). Costa Adeje adds 9, including catamarans, discover dives, yachts and the Twin Ticket. Amarilla Golf is the base for the submarine, the jet ski tour and a 2-hour buggy. San Miguel de Abona hosts the medieval dinner show at Castillo San Miguel. Practical information

  • On boat trips take sun cream, a hat and a light jacket: it is cooler at sea than on land.
  • Dress warmly for Teide even in summer; on stargazing evenings the temperature drops sharply.
  • Book ahead in high season (July, August, Christmas and Easter): catamarans and Teide tours sell out.
